Photo Walks and Field Trips

Blithewold Mansion- Wednesday, April 10, 2024

The field trip committee is pleased to announce that our next field trip will take place on Wednesday, April 10, 2024,  at Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum, 101 Ferry Rd., Bristol, RI.  We plan to meet at the commuter parking lot on Rt. 124 in Harwich at 8:30 a.m., if anyone who would like to arrange to drive down with a friend or on your own. There is ample free parking at Blithewold Mansion.

Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum is a 33-acre summer estate with grand views of Narragansett Bay and is significant in American history as one of the most authentic examples of the Country Place Era. The property features a 45-room mansion which is surrounded by a series of lovely gardens that range in character from mysterious to exotic and from poetic to practical. An exceptional collection of rare and unusual plants, specimen trees, an accessible greenhouse, and whimsical stonework project. Some of the notable specimen trees include a Giant Sequoia, Dawn Redwood, Weeping European Beach and Star Magnolia. Next week the Daffodil field should be in full bloom, along with many other spring blossoms. To see what is currently in bloom, click here: https://www.blithewold.org/about/gardens/

TICKETS MUST BE PURCHASED ONLINE IN ADVANCE
The ticket price is for adults is $20. There is apparently no senior discount. Tickets may be cancelled until 9:59 am on the prior day. The ticket price includes self-guided tours of the mansion as well as the gardens. Click here to purchase a ticket: https://www.blithewold.org/

In terms of camera equipment, you would want to bring a wide-angle lens, a mid-range telephoto lens and a macro lens. I have not been able to determine what their tripod policy is at Blithewold, but you could bring one and leave it in the car until we ask at the desk. You would also want to bring a diffuser, if it is a sunny day.

We plan to spend most of the morning exploring Blithewold.  Around midday we plan to drive into Newport for lunch at Busker’s, an Irish Pub on Thames Street. Over lunch, we can discuss the many options available to spend the afternoon, including street photography on Thames Street, Bowen and Bannister’s Wharfs, walking along the Cliff Walk past the Newport Mansions, driving along Ocean Avenue to photograph the coastline. We are leaving the afternoon open-ended for now in order to give folks the option of spending the afternoon in a way that best suits their interests.

If you are interested in attending this field trip, please send an email to pdwatson2@gmail.com.

Field Trip Committee,
James Walczek and Pat Watson
